A Bed of Roses

A Bed of Roses. Collage.

New Year’s Eve will be lit by a Blue Moon and the moonlight will welcome the new year, 2010. Obviously, this only happens once in a blue moon!

As I prepared my dreamboard for the Full Moon Circle, I thought a lot about this. The Blue Moon shining as fireworks go off and the new year rings in. The passage between the first and second decade of this century.

Then I thought about the word I’ve chosen to guide me through the New Year. My word is “ease”. I thought of clouds and minimalism. But in the end my research of the word and its origin lead me to the synonym “bed of roses”, and that was irresistible! So here it is, passionate, romantic ease!

Christmas Crackers

We had a wonderful Christmas and are now enjoying “mellandagarna”, the days in between Christmas and New Year’s. Peaceful days for contemplation, cosy days at home, long walks in the snow.

Before I return to my new book, The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, and painting software Art Rage 3 I wish you a “happy continuation”, “god fortsättning”, as the Swedish greeting goes.

Firefly Lights And A Sunset

Sunset view from the studio.

iPhone photography: Firefly lights and a sunset view from the studio.

In the winter, the sunset begins around three o’clock in the afternoon, and then it goes on for an hour. I often think, these sunsets are the reward for putting up with the dark and short Scandinavian winter days. Photos rarely capture these sunsets and although I’m often tempted to paint them, the paintings would probably be considered garish, cheap, unrealistic and even cheesy!

Today we’re closing the studio for the winter holidays. I’m busy finishing my last projects before the break and preparing a holiday e-mail with limited edition desktop goodies exclusively for members of Club Marmalade Moon. I expect to keep on blogging throughout the holidays. We’ll open the studio on the 8th of January and look forward to starting the new decade in a refreshed and inspiring environment.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who reads my blog, my window from my studio and to the world. Your comments and emails have been so encouraging, appreciative, inspiring and supportive. I wish you all the very best for the holiday season and for 2010!

Once In A Blue Moon

Snowy Night. Winter landscape with full Blue Moon.

Snowy Night. Winter landscape with full Blue Moon.

If something happens “once in a blue moon” it happens very rarely, but it does happen and I see this idiom as an expression for a miracle. I love the phrase!

This month there actually will be a Blue Moon on December 31, New Year’s Eve. How magical this sounds! But, what is a Blue Moon?

Traditionally, the Farmers’ Almanac referred to the Blue Moon as an extra full moon that occurred in a season. A season normally had three full moons. If a season had four full moons, then the third of the four full moons was known as a blue moon. According to modern folklore, a Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month and it’s this kind of modern Blue Moon that we’ll see this month.

Here’s a desktop wallpaper to put you in the mood for the Full Blue Moon. Snowy Night, a desktop picture with a magical, moonlit winter wonderland. Blue and white snow drifts, the full moon and a starry sky.
