Creative Minutes

13 November 2009 Filed in: Creativity

ArtAlright, I’ve got creative projects I love to work with, and it’s one thing when I’ve got large blocks of time to devote, but often I find my time filling up with work and chores and other obligations.

How can I stay in touch and focused on something I enjoy so much, with ease and joy, without it becoming a challenge or a pressure and without setting the stakes so high that I set myself up to fail? How can I make my creative process an organic part of my life, so I keep my momentum, even when there doesn’t seem to be any time?

What if I could spend quarter of an hour every day on my personal creativity? Or even ten or five minutes? It would keep my creative process going, and my projects would continue to grow, even when I’m too busy to spend long chunks of time with them!

Here’s the idea for Creative Minutes:

  • Start off by finding activities that evolve creative projects and that can be done in 5, 10 or 15 minute blocks, without putting your creativity on hold.
  • Next, fit them into daily life, from Monday to Friday, leaving the weekends (or two different days) free for other activities.

I know I’m not the only person who has trouble finding time for creativity, perhaps this idea is something we could work on together? Maybe you’ve got a book on the back burner? Artwork or poetry in a drawer? Neglected craft projects, an instrument or camera on the top shelf? Feel free to join in. Share your ideas in the comments or write about your Creative Minutes on your blog. Finding methods to advance your creative dreams in micro-bites. Wouldn’t it be fun to share ideas on how to find ways to live with our creative dreams every day?

I’ve made four square banners for Creative Minutes that I’ll be using for the project. Feel free to use them too if you like! Happy creating!

  1. Hello, Kate! Thank you so much for visiting me this weekend. It is terrific to meet you and find your very beautiful and incredibly inspiring place here in blogland! :o) This post especially stuck a chord as it was just the encouragement I needed for carrying into the New Year some new habits for fitting more creativity into my life. I do a lot of creative things already, delving into all sorts, but finding the time to do everything of this creative nature, as well as all the everyday things is a big challenge. I like your idea of breaking things up into to short time increments. I will try it! I see you are in Stockholm and part Swedish. I am an American living in Norway… So we are neighbors! :o) Happy Weekend…May it be filled with creativity and magic moments!

Thanks Tracy and wow, we are neighbours! I love having a mix of cultures in my life! Hope you can make use of Creative Minutes, it’s going to be exciting to see how the project works out!

  2. Dear Kate, i do find it hard to find time on weekdays to work on my creative projetcs. What i normally do to keep my creative juice and projects running on weekdays is to carry with me a project on the go. Each day before i leave my house for day job, i pack up one project usually embroidery projects and put it into my “on the go” craft bag…so i could work on it in the train {i travel to day job by the train…takes around 30 mins ride each day} or during my lunch time. I truely adore this idea of Creative Minutes! Such a wonderful and fresh idea! Thanks so much for hosting this!

Oh and yes i am using my new slr camera to take pictures for my blog entries incuding the quilting blocks! Thank you so very much for your lovely comment. It makes me soo very happy…and i read it over and over again for about 20 mins hehe

Have a lovely merry happy weeekend and love to you!

  3. Hi Kate, what a great idea. I have so many activities that creativity often gets put on hold. For 5, 10 or 15mins per day, one idea is to do some daily drawing or writing in a journal. Or use the time to look for inspiring written or visual material, that could be collected in to a visual diary. Or perhaps doing meditation or other form of exercise that could assist in clearing the mind and refreshing the spirit to aid in creativity. Hope this helps! Wini.

Hello Wini, thanks so much for your great ideas! I’ve started a journal to gather some of my Creative Minutes in!

  4. This is great Kate. I love all the ideas. I don’t always have big chunks of time to devote to anything. As a mom home with the kiddies this is the way I often do alot of creative work. Small moments of time in the day. Either to draw a bit, jot down ideas for a project, gather materials to use later, take photos for inspiration. Little bits of CREATIVE MINUTES really keep you in the flow of creativity.

This is what I need to learn to do too! I tend to get drawn into work, chores anything but my creative dreams. Even working with technical things like some detail of how this website works, rather than bits of dreams!

  5. Hi Kate ! I hope your week is going well. What a great idea to create these little folders to put the creative ideas in. It takes away the stress of trying to find time. You are so cleaver. It’s a great reminder to just be creative even if it’s in little bits and starts. Take care and thanks for sharing these.
