Designing the Collection of Process Icons: The Dreaded Report
Icon sketches for "dreaded report"
I’m really struggling with this icon for “Dreaded Report”. Maybe some of the boring, corporate cubicle office culture that I’m trying to infuse this icon with, is rubbing off on me?
So I made some variations, one with a ballpoint pen, one with a graph and one with a skull. And then I can’t make up my mind… Should I put them all in the collection, or leave some out? What do you think? [To be continued... ]

hmmm. I like the skull and graph ones better than the pen one.The graph icon most clearly illustrates corporate report I think, but I really like the skull one, for the humor injected in it. And the title “dreaded report” cracks me up.

Dearest sweet Kate, i really adore that one with the skull lots and the pen would be my next choice! I feel the same way as sweet Amy that the skull one totally calls out to “Dreaded Report”. Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you!

Hi Kate, I think I prefer the pen! The skull is fun, but for me it could reinforce my mental block towards the “dreaded report”. Also, if I were at work and the boss just happened to walk by & notice that a report she’d asked me to do was filed under an icon with a skull, it might not go down very well…! Re the graph… I wonder if you could try a version with a pie chart? It might look more “friendly” and you could add different colours? Wini xo
Thanks a TON, everyone for your thoughts and ideas!
I’ve been thinking, actually the Dreaded Report really doesn’t fit in with the theme of Process Icons! All of the other icons indicate the stage of the process, not what it is so to speak, actually, the more I think about it, the Dreaded Report might fit better as an update to the Organizer collection. Does that sound logical?
I love the skull Kate. It makes me think of something super urgent and makes me giggle all at the same time. Laughter is helpful when you are nearing a deadline.
the graph makes sense to me (maybe because those numbers are the real dread in my mind!) – but they are all lovely!

Thanks everyone for your input! It’s been a big help for me!
Okay, the skull made me laugh, absolutely! But I think you’re right – it doesn’t quite fit. I’d love to see a set of icons that all had a little bit of twisted humor, though!

I think the skull should have eyebrows, one of which should be saying, “shouldn’t you be working on me right now? Hmmm…” Funny, but threatening!
Is it part of the process? For me, absolutely. If no other part than the beginning – “if I don’t get to this, the process will never really begin!”
I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments!
I’m reading the skull as “killer” report
like the secret weapon
very powerful!
