First Impressions of the iPad

I expected the iPad to be a revolutionary device and holding it in your hands, interacting with it, really is a revolutionary experience. It’s the computer of the future.
- It’s fast!
- It’s powerful!
- It’s intuitive, responsive, easy and inviting to use
- The iPad with its multi-touch screen and single tasking is the first computer that adapts to how humans work, while other computers expect us humans to adapt to how they work
- The iPad apps I’ve tested embrace the idea of simplicity, beauty, fun and ease. Just like the iPad itself
- The iPad is the first computer I’ve used where reading really feels inviting and user friendly
- This tablet computer is wonderful for a new kind of story telling! The iPad can blur the line between reading, watching films, gaming and I can see how people could invent new ways of telling stories where images, film, audio, text and interactive experiences all blend together into a new kind of multimedia story telling
- The digital environment on an iPad feels peaceful and focused
- The touch screen is crisp and sharp and the book-size feels user friendly
- The iPad lives up to its promise of long battery life
- You need a bag and/or a slip to protect your iPad
- You need a soft, lint-free cloth to remove marks left by your fingers
The iPad and iPhone are innovative devices that bring to mind Think Different, Apple’s advertising campaign from 1997
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Now, what I’m really interested in, is how I can use this revolutionary tablet computer as a digital, portable, creative art studio! I’ll be back on Tuesday with my findings and hope to present a list of 20 outstanding creativity apps for the iPad.

I’m so jealous!
I used one all too briefly recently and was impressed at its compact size and how beautifully it rendered text and images. I can see it replacing my laptop when I eventually need to retire it, although I hope that day is a long way off. A desktop for “serious” work at home and an iPad for travel would be my ideal combination.
As for its potential – I’m quite excited about where the device may take publishing. Like you say, there are so many ways of telling a story with it.
Enjoy!
Hello Jason,
The advantage with waiting is always that you’ll be able to get an upgraded version later on, or a good deal on an older one!
I can imagine that you who are so versatile with both writing and photography would have a lot of fun and use of an iPad!
I was actually thinking that for most people, the iPad is really all you need. If I didn’t need the art and design software I use on my iMac, I’d be fine with just an iPad.
It’ll be exciting to see how the iPad sparks the imagination of software developers! Hopefully, they will develop innovative software that makes it possible to move entirely over to the iPad!
It’s also really exciting that this beautiful tablet computer is so low-priced!
Oh, and I’d love to find out how you publish your own book in iBooks! Let me know if you find out?
Very exciting!
Hi Kate,
I’m so glad you wrote about this. I had been wondering how the ipad users of the world were doing. I really would like to get one of these but the question that lurks in my mind is “does it have flash capabilities?”
I will be mailing you shortly about your Gotland inquiries. We’ve been having many water fights. Kram Valarie
Hello Valarie,
Thanks so much for the info about Gotland!
No it doesn’t have Flash, and I don’t know if that will be available in the future. Personally I don’t mind one bit, I suppose I don’t surf to pages that have Flash content much because I haven’t even noticed any missing Flash bits.
Kram!
Very impressive! I’ve yet to try one of these… but maybe soon, as hubby is a techic junkie! ;o) What I really like about the iPad is the size–very pick-up-and-go. Will be eager to hear/see your artistic findings with this wonderful new gadget. Happy Day, Kate ((HUGS))
Tracy, do let me know if you get to test it out! It’s really a lovely and user-friendly device! Hugs!
This thing really is amazing! Over here in Canada it is crazy expensive, but one day when the prices go down I will buy one for myself. I think the ipad is a beauty and the covers that I have seen on the internet are really awesome. You are one lucky duck for having this beauty. I hope it really helps you with your future with your artistic capabilities. I think you should keep up posting how you can use this thing effectively….that would be an essential post for me to read :)
Hi Megs, Yes I’m really lucky to have got an iPad through work! Apple haven’t released them on the market here in Sweden yet, but when I look at the price on the American store, I think the low-end option without 3G is extremely cheap compared to the price of a laptop. For some families it could make the difference between not being able to afford to buy a computer and being able to. Even so, it could still be a lot of money and out of one’s budget too.
One thing to consider when one thinks about the price of an iPad is that the apps are really inexpensive. Some are free, many cost round $5 and up to $9, very few cost more than that. And that’s a huge difference compared to software for a traditional computer! I kind of feel bad for the developers, because it can’t be easy to make a living on these low prices for their software!
I’ll be writing more about how the iPad can be used for creativity, so stay tuned! :)
Hi Kate. The ipad does look and feel great (checked it out in the store) but can you use photoshop on it?
Hi Dana, yes it really is fantastic and no, you can’t run Photoshop on it. Or Illustrator. Or ArtRage. So sadly I can’t switch over to using only the iPad yet, since I need those for my work.
I think one has to remember that it is a different kind of device, and see what kind of imagination it sparks with developers.
However, there are tons of really interesting apps for creating art, and I’m testing and compiling a list of the top apps to present to you here on Tuesday!
That’s really interesting Kate – look forward to reading your art studio experiments! x
thanks for this review. I have been reading so many different opinions on the ipad lately. But coming from someone who makes her living through digital design, your opinion weighs heavily.
Great review on the ipad Kate. It was only released here in Australia on May 28 so havent had a chance to even look at it yet. Its great to get some first hand feedback on it tho.Thanks.

Nice summary, it is a great device, looking forward to seeing how you use it creatively. Thanks also to Chris in the comment above for the link to our site (he isn’t from the team so it wasn’t a shameless plug ^_^). Thanks for sharing this with us!
Hi Phil, thanks for stopping by! Love your blog! It’s very inspiring!
I clearly misunderstood Chris comment, so I’ve edited my response to him. Thanks for clarifying!

i haven’t up/down??loaded many apps yet- any you recommend that are especially cool?
i just took it on vacation and it was so great to have it and not lug around my computer and books! :)
Welcome home from your vacation, Kerri! Yeah… I know what you mean about finger stains! I’ve got a huge list of creative apps scheduled for Tuesday, and I hope you find some gems in that list!
Hi Kate, Thx for the ipad review! You’re so lucky to have one already. I went to the Apple store and checked it out and its great. I also liked how people of all ages were drawn to it at the store. Multimedia storytelling sounds very exciting indeed. Can’t wait to see how this develops! Looking forward to your review of creativity apps :)
Kate, I have been anti-apple for many many years but the iPad is a great product. I think when the next version of the iPad comes out, I will give it a try. I love the way this one feels but I want to be able to do more with it without having to go find tons of apps.
