Here are the two easiest and most common methods for changing the icons in Windows Vista.
To change special system icons, such as My Computer, My Network Places or Recycle Bin follow these steps:
- Right click on the desktop.

- Choose Personalize from the menu.
- In the window that opens, click on “Change desktop icons” in the upper-left corner
- Select the icon you wish to change.
- Click the Change Icon button to open the icon selection window.
- In the icon selection window, click the Browse button.
- Use the file selection dialog to locate to the folder that contains the icons you downloaded.
- Choose the file you want to use as a replacement and click Open.
- Click OK in the Change Icon window and in the Desktop Icon Setting Window
How to Change Individual Folder Icons
- Download the file organizer.zip
- Unzip the file and save it somewhere you can find it such as downloads file or desktop
- Right click on desktop icon, select “properties”.
- Select “customize” tab and click on “change icon…” button
- Select “browse” and go to the location the organize.zip file was saved to
- Select the folder design to take the icon place
- Restart computer for effects to take place
Your icons should immediately reflect your changes.
