Julie, Julia and Joie de Vivre

The Skandia Cinema, Stockholm, Sweden
Yesterday I watched Julie and Julia (here’s a link to the trailer) with my mum. It’s a delightful, witty and sensual film about passion, obsession and lots of butter!
New York blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams) spends a year cooking and blogging her way through Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”. This meant that Julie had 365 days to cook 524 recipes from the classic cookbook that introduced the French cuisine to America documenting the process in her blog The Julie/Julia Project.
What I adore about Julie and Julia is the joie de vivre, the zest for life, the passion that infuses Julia! I’m so fed up with artists in film and literature portrayed as tormented, miserable, paying a price, victims of their past or current times, that it was refreshing with the description of Julia Child’s creativity as a passion for life. A joy. Julia loves cooking, she loves her husband, she loves writing, she loves Paris and she loves life. First and foremost. Then she becomes famous. That’s delicious, sublime! As Julia would say: Bon appétit!

Sounds like a wonderful movie! I will check it out too! Thanks for sharing and wishing you a wonderful merry happy week! Love to you!
I too thought it was a wonderful show and I loved the portrayal of Julia Childs and her husband’s life in Paris. I thought the pairing of leads for Julia and Paul was inspired. You could “feel” their joy for each other.
I was less interested the “blogger” girl but I understand the counterpoint required. I kept wanting the show to get back to Julia.
:-)
Yes! So tired of films that depict life as an ongoing tragedy and the artist as tortured soul! Let’s go back to the great films of the 30’s and 40’s – to the joy of stories like “It Happened One Night” and “Mr Smith Goes to Washington.” Less Wallender. More Elwood P. Dowd. I am smiling just thinking of it.
A wonderful week to you Kate England and thank you for your thoughts.
I have heard lots of wonderful things about this movie. I will have to watch it at some point. I read an article about the recreation of Julia’s kitchen for the movie. Very interesting.
Hi Kate, Great review…! I enjoyed the movie too & Meryl Streep was a joy to watch. After the movie, I was inspired to search for Julia Childs on youtube and I read parts of Julie’s blog too. I enjoyed both ladies’ stories. I liked the fact that Julie was a blogger, and think its amazing that she cooked all the recipes in one year. Bon Appetit! :)
I loved this movie. Her passion for experiencing and loving life is so inspiring. Can one ever have too much butter. I just love the stuff.
I’m dying to see this movie! So glad to see that everyone seems to have enjoyed it so much.
Jacqueline, Dana and Michele, I so hope you get the chance to see the film and would love to hear what you think of it!
Stephen, yes, I see what you mean, I think the story about Julia has a uniqueness about it, and it’s so joyous! I was interested in Julie too, but her story didn’t develop quite as much during the film. I suppose that is only natural as it was one year of her life, but a good 30 years in Julia’s… And yes Paul was brilliant too!
Edward, yes there are some of the original feel-good-films! Sounds like perfect Christmas films!
Dana, I’d love to read that article if it’s something online?
Wini, I laughed out loud in recognition when Julie got her first comment! Yes, it’s interesting to see a film about blogging and after the film I was so curious to find out what Julie is doing now, but I couldn’t find much.
Valarie, yesssssss, exactly!
Hi Kate, I also laughed when Julie got her first comment :)
She is still blogging..! http://juliepowell.blogspot.com/
Thanks for finding her blog and sharing the link, wini! Yeah… that was funny, and her MUM! Gosh…
Kate, I loved the movie too, for all the reasons you mentioned! Well said! So joyous and such a fun journey. It was actually what inspired me to finally get blogging, too – and cooking with more care and love – it all looked so fun and delicious.
Oh, yes I can see how it’s inspiring! Yes… I find it so liberating too! Now off to read your blog!
