I don't think that's an ignorant question at all! It's not easy to tell, with all the possibilities given! It's a watercolour painting collage. So that the background part is one painting, then I made the bird shapes and copied those parts out of other watercolour paintings and assembled them. So the watercolours are created with traditional paints, scanned in, and then the birds are assembled/composed/created on the computer, but other than that I didn't tweak the image in Photoshop. It was very fun and interesting to see the contrasting grains in the different paintings work together!
