And art without a reason too! I have just started painting with no end in sight but for the joy of doing it….it may not be anything that will change the world but it is changing me….allowing me to let go of perfectionism and the need to produce something ‘worthwhile’, something ‘useful’. Thank you for this glimpse into slow art, a wonderful prompt to think and ponder on!
Oooh, Robert Hughes! What a fistful of good memories from the art school it has brought me to listen to him in that speech…
Totally agreeing with Mousy Brown! May one of the main reasons of art’s existence it’s that anyone who draws, paints, films, etches, writes (just whatever) do it simply because it feels great, whilst you’re at the thing!
Also I’ve always believed that, no matter how polished your skills were, if you’re truly into it, art practicing requires you’ll stay in tune with yourself and everything around, a fact & a state of mind I think it’s very positive nevertheless not easy to reach! But, personally, I find Hughe’s last phrase “art it is the very opposite of mass-media” quite inspiring (moreover, that’s something I miss so much in my everyday’s work as a graphic designer…This excess of immediacy can hollow you out a lot).
In any case: reeeeal good post this one! I’ve enjoyed it so much ;D
Hello Alexei, and many thanks for your thoughtful comment! I’m so glad you found the Robert Hughes video inspiring!
Yes, it can be so easy to lose touch with that part of creativity. Creating for no reason. Or simply for the enjoyment. I like your idea that “practicing art requires you’ll stay in tune with yourself and everything around, a fact & a state of mind”. Maybe one could say that art can be self discovery or play a part in creating one’s personality too?
I think a lot of people have got so caught up in mass media through social media, streaming videos and all the other forms of mass media that infuse our daily lives, leaving little space left for creating or contemplating!
What you wrote about “This excess of immediacy can hollow you out a lot” rings a bell for me too!
oh how I long for a life drawing class! But then again, I have two little subjects that I could sketch any time of day. Why don’t I? Maybe I start today. Thanks for that video and the inspiration. AG Ambroult recently posted..Home. It’s Where We Are.

So true! Two models in motion! Really fun and challenging to draw! I’d love to see some of your work if you decide to do that!
