Soon September

Clinging onto summer. Although life has picked up speed, I’m trying to hold on to pockets of easy and slow life. Simple cooking. Swims in the lake when the weather permits. Either there’s been a heat wave or else it’s been rainy and chilly, and it’s like summer never quite happened this year. Although, of course it did. Actually, it’s still summer, I’m just being a bit dramatic I suppose…

Despite a wonderful and inspiring journey to Visby during our vacation in June, I wouldn’t say no to another week, or two, of beautiful summer weather to recharge and soak up the sun before autumn begins.

How has your summer been? Are you ready for the promise of change in September, for a fresh start with sharpened pencils and leather boots, or would you rather linger on in sandals, dipping your toes in the warm lake?

The Transformation of Seasons

Seasons. The constant transformation. I find it fascinating to go back and compare photos from the same spot but at different times of the year.

Always in transition. Movement. Gradual change. Through deep sleep and hibernation to abundant spring and summer. Harvest. Like the creative cycle.

The autumn photo above was originally posted with other startlingly yellows in Delight In Yellow and the winter picture is from Sugar Land.

Snow, trees and buildings.

5 Creative Minutes

Even grey days are packed with colour when you look more closely. The delicate moss on the branches of the oak tree and the blue tones in stone and asphalt. The sparkle of raindrops lingering on a leaf. A sprinkle of tiny yellow leaves and red berries seem almost startlingly bright!

Delight In Yellow

Yellow. If anyone asked me what my favourite colour is, I don’t think I’d say yellow. But here it is and every time I see pure yellow it washes over me like delight in the form of a colour. A miracle. And I ask myself, how can anything be so yellow?!

Maples trees turn vibrantly yellow, sometimes blushing lightly before turning a flaming scarlet red. These drifts of golden leaves remind me of treasure, childhood dreams of gold coins.

Below is a photo with yellow and gold leaves on dark soil, that inspires me to create patterns for textiles. The beauty of nature is an endless source of inspiration to me!

Autumn Glows Exhilarating

This time of year each day comes with subtle or startling changes and it makes me feel so present, my senses alert, my heart happy and grateful.

Sometimes I wonder if I could express my impressions in the form of textile prints and tableware, but the whole industrial process seems pretty daunting!

On my walks I’ve been listening to CraftSanity podcasts, a recommendation from New York artist Dana Barbieri who is working on a an inspiring Art Book project. I also joined a Facebook group “Faceless for six days”, the idea is to see how it feels to not use Facebook. So be warned, my Facebook footprint will be even tinier than usual!

Saturday’s The Experience Animation and Technology Exhibition 2009 where students of Hyper Island featured interactive and digital art powered by Wii technology turned out to be an exciting sensory overload! A few projects that made a deep impression were Soul Music (create music and light effects by dancing), The Jacksson Pollock Experience (make your own virtual “drip” technique paintings), The Triforce Installation (create ambient sounds and light animations) and the ingenious ThisPlay (hand held touch screen paper displays).

Here’s another image with leaves that makes me think of transferring my impressions into pattern design.

Then again, I’m enjoying the ease of photography. The fast process is perfect for capturing ideas and makes such a contrast to the long and sometimes complicated process involved when I create with other techniques.

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend and that next week will glow exhilarating!
