Drawing Dancers

Flamenco

It's been such a pleasure to go to the figure drawing events at Dansmuseet, the museum of dance, as part of my life and figure drawing project this spring. The dancers, the music, bodies in motion, the body as an expression. And it's a humbling reminder of the daily practice that's involved in the life of a dancer.

The dancer dances to music of their own choice and then stops for two or three minute poses, then goes back to dancing. This spring there was a ballet dancer, a flamenco dancer and three modern dancers.

It's incredibly challenging, and this spring I've focused on the still poses, just relaxing and enjoying during the dancing. This autumn though, I'm going to try to capture the motion, the actual dancing.

The good news is, there'll be ten figure drawing events at the museum of dance this autumn! Highly recommended if you're in the Stockholm area!

A page from my sketchbook. Charchoal feels soft and forgiving to work with. Almost like sculpting, adding, removing, adjusting...

This spring I've been going to two-three different life drawing sessions each week. There's the traditional life drawing orgainised by the Organisation for Swedish Artists, there's a life drawing event with dancers in motion arranged by the museum of Dance, and a funky club that organises burlesque figure drawing events inspired by Parisian cabarets, American circuses and Russian pubs.

I'm reaching the last pages of my third sketchbook.

Life Drawing: The Sound of Charcoal

From my sketchbook: charcoal on paper. Soft and brittle. Smudges. A series of 2-5-10 minute poses. The sound of charcoal as it snaps. Different mediums see different things. Or I see differently using different tools... With charcoal I feel like I'm sculpting, adding, subtracting. The ink brush wants to find lines, shadows and light. This time I go back to charcoal. Here are a few of my sketches.
